Prince Amara, a former Lab Assistant attached to the United Brethren-in-Christ Hospital, Mattru Jong in Bonthe District has been sentenced to 3 years in prison or pay a fine of Le 30 million for 1 count of Corruption Offence.

The Lab Technician was initially indicted on two counts of corruption offences bordering on the misappropriation of public property contrary to Section 36(1) and Conspiracy to Commit a Corruption Offence contrary to Section 128(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act No.12 of 2008, as amended by the Anti-Corruption Act No.9 of 2019.

Section 36(1) states that “a person who misappropriates public revenue, funds or property commits an offence”, and section 128(1) states that “any attempt or conspiracy to commit a corruption case offence or aiding, abetting, counselling, commanding or procuring the commission of a corruption offence shall be punishable as if the offence had been completed and any rules of evidence which apply with respect to proof of any such offence shall apply in like manner to the proof of a conspiracy to such offence”

Amara was accused by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to have misappropriated public property from the 1st October to the 31st of October 2020. The ACC added that he also conspired with unknown persons to misappropriate medicine meant for the free healthcare initiative.

On the 10th June 2021, Amara pleaded guilty to the charges before Justice Anthony Ganda at the High Court in Bo.

Justice Ganda convicted Amara on count one and ordered that the Le 30 million fine be paid in two instalments – the first Le 15 million to be paid in 14 days and the remaining in the next 14 days.
