Makeni City, north of Sierra Leone will today be teeming with thousands of mourners as they pay their last respect to the Late Bishop George Biguzzi. The remains of the long-serving former Head of the Makeni Diocese who died in Parma, Italy arrived on Friday, for laying in his final resting place as he had wished.

He served the Makeni Diocese of the Catholic Church for decades and was well respected and loved for his charity work and educational support to thousands of people in the north of the country.

Bishop Biguzzi during the war years was also instrumental in getting the rebels open talks with the Government in a bid to end the 11 year long civil war in the country.

His efforts and those of other key players such as the late British High Commissioner Komrabai Peter Penfold and late United Methodist Church Bishop Joseph C. Humper, and the international community all helped in facilitating dialogue between the rebels and the government, paving the way for an end to the conflict.

After retiring as head of the Makeni diocese in 2012, he left for his native Italy but closely followed happenings in Sierra Leone- a country he considered home as well, such that he told those close to him that upon his death his remains were to be buried in Makeni.

After a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral in the town, Bishop Biguzzi’s body will today be laid to rest in front of the Cathedral, next to the grave of another popular and revered Italian Bishop- Augustus Azzolini.
