Bio leads Sierra Leone provisional results

An anxiously waiting voter population has been given an update on the number of votes counted so far in the June 24 Presidential election, after the Chief Electoral Commissioner of Sierra Leone, Mohamed K. Konneh announced the first set of provisional results which puts the incumbent President Julius Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) in the lead.

Konneh told journalists and both local and international Observers in Freetown on Monday that after collating of results from 60 percent of polling station across all the districts of Sierra Leone, Bio earned 1, 067,666 (one million and sixty-seven thousand, six hundred and sixty-six.

 His closest challenger, Dr. Samura M.W  Kamara  of the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) gained  793,751  (seven hundred and ninety-three thousand, seven hundred and fifty-one) votes.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Presidential Candidate Mohamed Chernor Bah came third with 14,829 votes, followed by Charles Margai of Peoples Movement for Democratic Change(PMDC) with 9,521 (nine thousand, five hundred and twenty-one) votes. The other nine presidential candidates got smaller votes including the only woman Iye Kakay who earned 3,094 (three thousand and ninety-four) votes.

Konneh promised to announce the full results in the next 48 hours.
