Member of Parliament representing constituency 125 Alusine Alu- Conteh who was recently attacked by an unknown person in parliament has asked that MPs be protected and that they deserve to be given a medical allowance.
The MP made this call on the 13th of July 2022 whilst explaining his ordeal. With neck braces around his neck for support, following the attack, the MP emphasized the need for protection and medical allowance. He explained that he was attacked on the 5th of July 2022 just after they had concluded a debate.
He said after a sitting, a group of people rained insults at them and threatened to destroy their vehicles. He said he went outside the lobby to ask his driver to ensure that the vehicle was in a safe place, at which point an unknown person threw a heavy stone at him, hitting his head and neck.
He stated that the incident made him unconscious and that when he came around, he found himself at the Chiothram Hospital. He spoke of having to undergo tests and scans and visit the doctor the next day in order to know the outcome.
Alu-Conteh said MPs do not have medical support or allowance, and as a result he had to foot his medical bill. He therefore asked that their security and medical issues be looked into.
In another development, acting on Standing Order 23, the Parliamentarian representing constituency 095, Mustapha Musa Sellu told the house that pictures of some MPs with audios attached have been making rounds on social media threatening they will be voted out if they enact the Public Elections Act.
He said they and their families have been threatened. “Our security is paramount,” said Sellu. He believed there was nothing contentious in the bill to warrant such a threat.
