The Sierra Leone Police is investigating the Operations Manager of the Apex Bank branch in Kenema, Foday Michael S. A. Sesay, after being arrested for allegedly embezzling over one million new Leones (Le 1 billion of old) from the bank.
Speaking at the Police weekly press briefing on Thursday 15th September 2022 in Freetown, the Head of Operations at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), detective Superintendent Francis Lebbie said the Operations Manager allegedly stole one million, one hundred and ninety thousand, nine hundred and twenty-six Leones and twenty-five cent (NLe1, 190, 926. 25) from the Bank and that investigations on the matter continue.
Also in updating the press about the August 10 violent protests, Detective Superintendent Lebbie said that 525 suspects were initially arrested across the country. He confirmed that 164 people would be tried in court, although he said they had also released 133 arrested for breaching the curfew orders and 24 juveniles.
In relation to the ongoing voter registration process, Chief Inspector Paul Hassan Turay from the Northwest region, said the former Chairlady of the All People’s Congress (APC), Fatmata Jalloh, was arrested for allegedly sending out a misleading statement during her sensitization process that 16 year-old children should go out and register in the on-going voter registration process.
She was said to have made the statement at the Masiaka Community, Centre on the 27 August this year, and her alleged misleading statement was contained in a video sent on social media. According to officer Turay the case is now in Freetown for further investigations.
The head of Freetown East, Deputy Superintendent Edward Senesie, disclosed that 12 people had been arrested and are still in detention at their CID regional headquarters for falsification of official documents with the intention of getting registered in the ongoing 2023 voter registration process.
