In an effort to support the Free Quality Education programme, Sierra Leone Ambassador to Kuwait, Haja Ishata Thomas on Monday 18th January 2022 donated 22 bags of rice (25kg) plus six million Leones to teachers of the Murray Town Army Primary and Secondary School.
Speaking on behalf of the Board of the school, the Chairman Board of Governors, Sylvester Meheux said that the donation was an indication of the teachers’ commitment to the development of the education sector in Sierra Leone. He expressed gratitude to the ambassador for the gesture.
In response, Ambassador Thomas said she was honoured to give back to the school she headed for 15 years before switching her career to diplomacy. Recalling her time as the pioneer principal of the Secondary, she explained her ordeal to construct more classrooms to provide access to quality education.
“I am here to make a modest contribution to the teachers of this school as a show of gratitude for their unwavering support to the Free Quality Education programme. This gesture complements the President’s vision for teachers, as the first time in the history of Sierra Leone, a sitting president publicly recognized teachers by awarding them for their good work,” she said.
She encouraged the pupils to make good use of the Free Quality Education programme and called on the government to provide more classrooms to accommodate the growing number of pupils.
Speaking on behalf of the teachers, Fanta Konteh noted that it was the first time in the history of the school that teachers had received a donation. She extended appreciation to the Ambassador, praying for her vision and continued progress.
A similar gesture was extended to the best 2021 BECE and WASSCE pupils of the School, assuring them of more support in the ensuing years.
She extended a similar gesture to teachers of the Aberdeen Municipal Junior Secondary School as a symbol of gratitude. She pledged to support the development of the school.
