A man facing preliminary investigation into a larceny charge has rejected a statement tendered by a police prosecutor saying it was different from what he told the police. 21-year-old accused Bockarie Koroma was testifying in his defence after the prosecution had closed its case.
The accused told the court that as a laborer, he always carried cement for the complainant, Alhaji Jalloh at his store at Yams Farm. He said he once told the complainant that he was sick and wanted to take a short medical leave and when the request was approved, he handed the store keys to the complainant. He said he then went to the provinces for two weeks after and upon his return the complainant accused him of stealing three hundred and sixty thousand NLe (360,000) that was discovered in his bag that was in the store while he was away.
The accused said he then told the complaint that they ought not to have searched his bag behind his back. According to him, the money purportedly found in his bag was a mere allegation because if he had stolen such an amount of money, he would not have returned to the complainant. He also told the court that the complaint also locked him up in the store before handing him over to Police.
Meanwhile police inspector, Sellu TAP had cause to apply for an adjournment for the prosecution to bring the statement recorded by the police that the accused had now rejected.
The case resumes on 14th August, 2023.
