The gender parity group, Fifty-Fifty Sierra Leone has in a press release expressed concern over the spate of cyber bullying targeted at female political leaders and heads of election observer missions.

The Group through their release dated 30th June 2023 stated that “We implore the public to recognize that our diverse views and opinions of the still ongoing process can be expressed through constructive dialogue devoid of threats, bullying, and personalized attacks”.

Highlighting the disadvantages of cyberbullying against women, the release stated “Cyberbullying against women in leadership positions not only undermines their contributions but also has broader implications for the overall democratic process”. It explained that cyberbullying can discourage women from participating in politics, limit their representation and deny society the benefit of diverse and inclusive governance.

It explained that the aftermath of elections ought to be a time for reflection, dialogue, and democratic growth, adding that there must be respectful spaces to air out grievances.

The release added that social media platforms and online forums must be spaces of positive engagement; it advised that when one comes across cyberbullying or harassment against women, they should report it to the relevant authorities who in turn should take quick action.

The Institution urged online users to embrace respectful dialogue, encouraging them to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue when discussing political matters online. “Disagreements are natural, but resorting to cyberbullying or personal attacks is unacceptable and counterproductive” a part reads.

In addition, the Group asked that citizens should adopt inclusivity by celebrating the contribution of women in politics and elections. It further stated that they should advocate for greater representation of women in leadership positions and support their participation in all aspects of governance.

The release said “Let us remember that a thriving democracy depends on the active participation and engagement of all citizens, regardless of gender. Together, we can foster an environment where women in leadership feel empowered, valued, and safe from online harassment”.

It called on Sierra Leoneans within and outside the country to exhibit the tolerance, calmness, and respectful behaviour that the country is known for.
