Police in Kono, eastern Sierra Leone, have arrested three men believed to be armed robbers. During a briefing at Police Headquarters in Freetown on the 3rd February this year, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Amadu Mannah said the men were also believed to have been responsible for robberies in Kissy, Freetown, and Bo, Southern Sierra Leone.
The Deputy Regional Commander Southern Region, Commissioner Hillary Sao, confirmed that the three men were also responsible for a murder and robbery in Bo City.
She said the suspects carried out their operations on the 13th and 14th of January this year before fleeing the region.
She affirmed that the three men were brought to Bo where an identification parade was carried out on the 3rd February with two of the men identified by a victim.
She said the third suspect was not identified by victims in Bo but confirmed that their investigations point that the same men carried out a similar robbery operation in Freetown.
The commissioner, in another development, said police also arrested a certain Abu Alex Yambasu of Tinkoko Village with a shotgun and that the matter is currently under investigation.
The police said the country is experiencing a spate of firearm discoveries in the country.
Information in the briefing revealed that the majority of these firearms were seized at the Lungi International Airport in Port Loko, North-Western Region of the country and that they are at the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters in Freetown for further inquiries.
Also, the police said an AK47 rifle was discovered at a dilapidated structure in Kissy, east of the capital. They said the ammunition of the rifle was hidden in a ceiling at the ramshackle structure.
Meanwhile, the police have urged the populace to remain calm as investigations are currently ongoing and that police roadblocks along major points across the country remain active.
