The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning is set to distribute land the size two town lots each to 200 lucky Sierra Leoneans who in a raffle draw conducted by the ministry last December won themselves the parcels of land. The allocation is to be done today Thursday 17th March, 2022.
The Ministry of Lands Housing and Country Planning has in a public notice dated 15th March 2022 noted that the Ministry has completed the Land preparation processes for the said winners. It added that the names of the winners have been gazetted as land owners on government lease at Upper Allen Town (previously known as South Africa) in Eastern Freetown. It added that the Survey Plans and offer letters have been signed “and the plots are ready for allocation.”
“In that regard, all the 200 winners of the aforesaid plots of land (two town lots each are kindly requested to converge at the land layout site at Upper Allen Town, (South Africa) on Thursday March 17 2022 at 3PM for the handing over ceremony,” the statement reads.
Land acquisition has become a contentious issue especially in the Western Area over the years. Some bloody confrontations over land had led to fatalities, with some officials in the ministry accused of being corrupt.
In an unprecedented move in the history of land possession in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning on the 9th December 2021 conducted its first ever raffle draw for the allocation of two hundred (200) plots of state lands to citizens.
The ceremony which took place at the Youyi Building in Freetown received 7,000 applicants from various backgrounds. 200 among them emerged lucky winners.
