Nasratu Kargbo

A 16 year- old girl Adama Kalokoh whose breast cancer situation attracted media attention that led to mastectomy on her, has died at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown. Her surgery was done in May 2021 and according to a close family member, she was doing fine and appeared healthy.

According to Politico’s last follow up on her recovery, the girl was doing well after the surgery and had plans of going back to school. About a month ago she began complaining of side pains and serious cold, the family member explained. Adama was taken again to Connaught and admitted; where she was for several weeks until she passed away on Wednesday 3 November.

Politico had earlier this year with the consent of her family, interviewed Adama, who  explained  she first noticed changes in her breast, accompanied by  excruciating pain. The breast got swollen to a point where the tumor forced it to rupture, and within months it was in a much disfigured state.

Her family could not afford to have a mastectomy done, and took to the media pleading for financial assistance to get the surgery done. People from different backgrounds helped the family directly while others rendered help through the Thinking Pink Breast Cancer Foundation. The organization then facilitated and paid for the treatment and the surgery.

Politico could not reach the family to ascertain the cause of death. It’s been confirmed that Adama’s family had gone to have her remains buried in their village.
