13 sentenced in Kenema for public disorder

Magistrate Abdul Carew of court no.1 in Kenema has sentenced 13 accused persons on two count charges, for riotous conduct contrary to section 12 (1) of public order Act of 1965, and public disorder contrary to section 12 (1) of 1965.

According to the particulars of the offence, Sahr Amara, a wheelbarrow man, Zombo Francis and 12 others on the 31st October 2021, jumped on the streets of Kenema city,  terrorizing residents, especially business women and carted away their goods, plantation crops, and other domestic animals under the pretext of poro society.  This happened during the observance of traditional rites  to mark the burial ceremony for  late section chief of Nongowa chiefdom, Kenema district Gbo-Lambaya section, Alhaji Mohamed Benson Suwu.

Following the ceremony, they were arrested for loitering with intent, unlawful gambling, riotous conduct and conspiracy and larceny. The 1st to 7th accused persons were sentenced to one year imprisonment or  pay a fine of four million Leones for the two counts charges while the 8th to 13 accused persons were sentenced one year imprisonment or pay a fine of two million six hundred thousand Leones. The juvenile accused were sentenced to two months imprisonment or a fine of one million Leones each.

The matter was prosecuted by ASP Daniel Konneh of Legal and Justice Department of the Sierra Leone Police while the accused persons were represented by defense counsel J.B Dauda.
